Apparently this was seven years ago today - a group of friends and I had just cycled 1,600km from Land’s End to John o’Groats in the UK to raise money for @cr_uk . . Good times! . . #latergram #throwback #lejog #cancerreasearch #charity #cycling #cyclist #cyclistlife

After a cold, damp start the weather seems to be improving for this morning’s @cycleofgiving. Great to see a good turnout for a good cause. My first 100km ride in nearly two years - should be interesting! 🚲 #cycling #cyclist #cyclistlife #charity

Been a bit slack with the cycling recently, and with the @cycleofgiving 100km ride tomorrow I figured I should get out for a spin this morning. Up early doors to take a look at how the groundwork’s for the new @universityofthesunshinecoast Petrie campus are coming along. On the subject of tomorrow’s charity ride, the guys over at @cycleofgiving and @tpchfoundation experienced a major outage of their registration/donation website earlier this week (maybe I should give them my business card for next year!) which has impacted their fundraising targets. Anyone wanting to donate to a great cause - organ transplant research - can head on over to http://bit.ly/cogphil (clickable link in bio). Every dollar helps! Anyways, I’m looking forward to getting out amongst the other riders tomorrow morning, even if my training isn’t quite as far along as I would like! #cycling #cyclistlife #charity #cycleofgiving #donationsneeded #donationswelcome #theprincecharleshospitalfoundation #fromwhereiride

Goodies in the post this morning - jersey and bib number for the @cycleofgiving bike ride in a couple of weeks #cycling #cyclist #swag #charity
Spent a little time this evening putting together something of a presence for my 2018 cycling challenge. First up - a cheeky bit of branding. It certainly won’t be winning any awards, but to me giving the challenge a logo has made things a little bit more legit in my mind.
A lot of the details are still up in the air (I’m already considering shifting the timing from August to November, which means it will be after my 40th birthday), and I’ll probably update the logo at some point, but for now I give you the Far North Queensland Dash - Coolangatta to Cape York.
Part of my strategy for raising support for this ride will revolve around an active social media presence, so I’ve set up another Instagram account at @fnqdash just for the ride (and all of preparation leading up to it). I’ve got the beginnings of a @justgiving page ready to start accepting donations for @dementia_australia and I’ll be sorting out a dedicated website at some point as well. In the meantime, if you could do me a solid and go follow @fnqdash that would be fantastic.
Thanks!
2018 is going to be a big year for me - I turn 40(!), I finally become an Australian citizen, and I will be cycling some 3,000km to raise money and awareness for @dementia_australia.
I wanted to complete a substantial athletic challenge before my 40th birthday in September and have settled on cycling from Coolangatta on the Queensland/New South Wales border all the way up to Cape York, mainland Australia's most northern point.
The challenge isn't just in the ride itself, though - the really tricky part will be transforming myself from a reasonably unfit, mildly overweight middle-aged guy into an endurance athlete, capable of cycling 200-250km every day for over two weeks.
I am aiming to complete the ride some time in August - exact dates and route are still a work in progress. Over the coming weeks I will be putting together a website to track my progress as well as accept donations. I will also start inviting corporate support for various aspects of the ride and my training. In the meantime you can follow my training progress on @strava (link in my bio). #2018 #2018goals #cycling #cyclist #charity #charityride
Feeling hella sick after eating some dodgy chicken yesterday, but brainstorming a physical challenge for the middle of next year. It’s going to involve cycling. Lots of cycling.
Currently looking for worthwhile Australia-/Queensland-based causes to raise money and awareness for (check out the link in my bio) - all suggestions welcome.
Bit of nostalgia - broke out one of the team jerseys from 2012 when a group of us cycled the length of mainland Britain (Land’s End to John O’Groats - 1,600km) to raise money for @cr_uk.
Great memories of a time when I was considerably fitter (I could easily smash out 120km on a Sunday afternoon to blow away a hangover), and by the fit of the jersey, considerably slimmer!
Easily one of the toughest, most memorable and most rewarding physical challenges I’ve undertaken - would love to do something similar again.
Thinking about that time in my life, it has increased my resolve to regain that level of fitness - albeit with less drinking (I’m more of a two-pot screamer these days, and don’t handle my hangovers very well!). #cycling #cyclist #cyclistlife #lejog #longdistance #charity #fundraising #cancerresearchuk #maninlycra #nostalgia #fitness #fitfor2017 #lycraselfie
"I love hill climbs!” - said no cyclist ever
I like to have targets with my cycling, and since I’m pretty time-poor at the moment, long distance rides aren’t really a possibility. So I’ve decided to combat one of the things I least enjoy about riding (hill climbing) and enter the inaugural @cootthaburn next February - essentially an uphill time-trial that climbs Mount Coot-tha overlooking Brisbane.
As many who know me know, Mount Coot-tha is pretty special to me - it’s where I proposed to my wife, amongst other things - hopefully when all is said and done I won’t hate the place haha.
I'll even try to raise money for charity (watch this space)
Training starts today. #shutuplegs
